Fostering our cats
Fostering a cat or kittens is a rewarding experience that has a hug impact on the lives and prospects of cats in need. Learn about what it means to be a foster carer for High Peak Cat Rescue and how you can make a real difference.

What is fostering?
Fostering provides a safe and loving temporary home for cats and kittens as they await their forever families. There are many reasons why we might look to foster cats until they're ready to be adopted - some examples include:
- Kittens of all ages
- Cats recovering from illness or injury
- Pregnant cats and mums with litters
- Nervous and traumatised cats and kittens who need quiet, an established routine and socialising
- Cats with complex health needs
Fostering allows us to rescue more animals and gives them a chance to thrive in a home environment. We will always try to match you to a foster case that suits your comfort, experience and personal circumstances.
Your role as a foster carer
As a foster carer, your role is to provide the space, care, comfort, time and patience in a home setting, to build their confidence and trust in humans. Daily and weekly tasks will involve:
- Feeding, litter changes and keeping their area clean
- Providing time to play and affection - in various measures depending on the specific needs of the individual cat
- Monitoring health and behaviour, and administering treatment and medicine where needed (under veterinary advice)
- Keeping the team informed and supporting us to help find their forever home

Who can foster?
We are looking for caring, reliable people with time and a calm space to offer to provide a safe and nurturing environment for our cats. So we have a few key requirements for our foster carers:
- Age: You must be 18 years or older to foster independently.
- Housing: You must either own your home or have written permission from your landlord allowing pets.
- Space: A quiet spare room or a dedicated safe, enclosed area is essential, especially if you have pets of your own. This allows the foster cat to settle, ensuring a stress-free transition.
- Time: Plenty of time, patience and love to share with cats who need it.
- Care: the ability to administer flea and worming treatments, and other medications as required.
- Transport: Ideally, you would have your own transport (in case you need to take the cat/kittens to the vets).
- Communication: We will need regular updates from you about the cat/s in your care, especially if you have any concerns about their health or development.
No formal experience is necessary - we will support you in your journey as a fosterer every step of the way.
